Global Environment Monitoring System for Air (GEMS Air)

OUR VISION

GEMS Air catalyzes scalable innovation using science and technology know-how, to enable developing country governments to drive transformation that improve the air their citizens breathe.

The Global Environment Monitoring System for Air (GEMS Air) unit housed in the Science Division of UNEP, supports countries to provide quality assured data to keep the state of the world’s air quality under continuous review, develops capacity of member states, provides information and services across the science-policy-public interface and fosters transformation by leveraging the collective knowledge of a global network of partners. The programme relies on a consortium of expertise from a multitude of stakeholders from global, regional and national level that inform on the application of the latest scientific know how.

GEMS Air is leading the deployment of affordable air quality monitoring networks for assessing air pollution in selected developing countries where data gaps for air quality has persisted for decades to monitor and assess trends and patterns of urban air quality using low-cost sensors, to support the development of evidence-based air quality management policies and to support the actions for mitigating air pollution. UNEP establishes engagement efforts following Interest and request for technical support by air quality focal points within local governments.
